How will economic prosperity affect children in the workforce?

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hey Delegates! Only a few short weeks until we are finally all in New York debating Topics A and B. I hope you all are just as excited as we are, and I cannot wait to meet you all in person.

Until then, I hope you are all keeping up with the current climate of economic growth in one of our main areas of focus: Southeast Asia. Relevant to Topic A, this article explains how the explosive growth in India's economy has allowed job opportunities to numerically rise, and therefore for the quality of jobs available to come up in concurrence.

Account for the Ripple Effect!

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hey Delegates!!
Your Director here, just popping by to show you guys this article. While reading this, keep in mind the intense ripple effect that one action can have on a population: especially how deeply it is felt by the indigenous populations in the interior.

And so it begins.....

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hey Delegates!!
So now that we are in the six-week range of the conference, (exciting, I know!), many of you should begin to prepare your research for our time together.

While you're doing so, your SOCHUM team (Santiago, Elias, and myself), will be constantly updating this blog in order to give you a better understanding of our topics and the direction in which you should orient your research.

Another welcome from your Assistant Director!

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hello!
I am Santiago Cerón Uribe, coming all the way from Bogotá ROCK CITY in Colombia, South America. I´m currently studying at the Universidad de los Andes here in my hometown, where I am majoring in both Computer Sciences and Mathematics. I´ve been in MUN since I was in the 9th grade in my school and I kinda regret not having joined earlier. Anyways, that would make it four years in MUN. However, this is my first NHSMUN and in fact, my first MUN conference out of my country, so you can imagine how excited I am about NHSMUN!
Love,
Santiago.

Welcome to SOCHUM, From one of your Assistant Directors!

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Greetings Delegates,

Traffick for Your Valentine

Conference:
NHSMUN Committee

Hey delegates!! Only a few short weeks until we all get to meet, and I hope you are all getting prepared and excited! Thank you for getting your position papers in on time.

In this article, the US State Department´s Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, Maria Otero's visit to Nepal from February 12 to 14, 2011 is explained. Her presence spotlighted the issue of human trafficking of women and children from Nepal into India that happens often in Nepal. This article also explains the demand for human trafficking sourced in the prevalence of poverty.

The Perpetual Trafficking Cycle

Conference:
NHSMUN Committee

Hey everyone! Take a look at this video produced by BBC about a UNICEF worker who works with children in Moldova to help them perform skits about the effects of human trafficking. In a nation where one out of two children have at least one parent working abroad, the concept of trust comes into play when recruiters come back to their homeland and take more victims.

Putting it into Perspective...

Conference:
NHSMUN Committee

The level of independence women are given is often perceived as a parallel to how developed a nation is. However, in this article, the United States, often thought to be one of, if not the most, developed country in the world is ranked 70th in terms of the number of women in our parliamentary system, yet a nation like Rwanda, which is considered to be a developing nation, ranks first with its percentage of 56.3% of its parliamentary seats female.

Let's make Laws!

Conference:
NHSMUN Committee

So one of the major ways that governments influence something they dislike, in this case trafficking, that occurs in their country is to make or strengthen laws that prohibit it. Evidence of nations who are updating their stand on human trafficking can be seen in recent developments within domestic systems, like in Ohio, and abroad, in Ghana.

Trafficking Origins

Conference:
NHSMUN Committee

Hey guys! I just wanted to direct your attention to this link in order to give you a better idea of the estimated distribution of where trafficking victims come from. When looking at the different percentage of people who are taken from each country, consider the unifying qualities that nations with large percentages have. For example, take Russia (who accounts for about 13.2%) and China, (which accounts for 5.8%) of trafficked victims. What do these two nations have in common? They are relatively large in land mass, have large populations, and are bordered with an array of other countries.
