Environmental NGOs Base in Singapore
Hello delegates! The conference is VERY soon, and I'm getting more and more excited each day! Just a quick announcement to make things clear, since I've been getting some emails about this- in NGO Forum, you are NOT representing the nation that your school is representing! You are solely representing your NGO on an international scale. So, let's say you got assigned the NGO Green Cross International, and your school represents China. You will NOT be representing China at all, but rather the global NGO Green Cross International. Got it? Feel free to email me at ngo.nhsmun@imuna.org with any further questions!
NOW on to the substantive stuff I have for you this week...I found these articles indicating that environmental NGOs are establishing their bases in Singapore! According to a recent news report, more international environmental NGOs are following the footsteps of NGOs like World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Conservation International, choosing Singapore as a base from which they will serve Asia's needs. NGOs have received government help from Singapore in the form of grants, tax incentives and even office space. Most of these NGOs typically work on issues outside of Singapore, but they do turn to the government for the availability of specific technical skills and access to regional funding.
Please check out the 3 articles I attached about this subject! I look forward to further discussing this material in committee, and potentially talking about ways to create incentives for governments to implement programs supporting environmental NGOs!
