Honduras Catastrophe Leads to Questions over Private Security

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Delegates of CCPCJ! What’s up?

My name is Sean Gilrain and I will be your AD for NHSMUN 2012! I am extremely excited for the conference and looking forward to meeting all of you! I hope that all of your research and preparation is going well and that all of you will have plenty of awesome ideas to debate in just under two weeks. To help you out, though, I have found a recent article that relates greatly to the committee and our topics.

Drug Legalization in Central America?

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hi delegates!

I hope you are all satisfied with your position papers. Starting today, I will be reading over your papers and seeing all of your research and hard work.

On Tuesday, a report by Fox News detailed the political push for drug legalization in South America. This is certainly controversial and is being discussed in many South American states as a way to undermine the drug cartels and the black market economy. At the same time, this requires tight governmental control and regulation, which is difficult, especially for developing countries.

Narco-Trafficking in Central and South America

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hi delegates!

Although published a couple of weeks ago, this CNN report entitled "Narco Wars" is an incredibly informative video. It details the enormous challenges of combatting drug cartels as well as discusses the impacts on the local communities and their governments. One official interviewed in the video explains that efforts are hindered by a lack of resources. The committee will certainly need to address this facet of the issue as we discuss ways to both reduce and prevent youth involvement in gang and drug-related crime.

Increased CPSS in Latin America

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Good morning (from Spain)!

Last week, The Washington Post published an article entitled "Security contractors see opportunities, and limits, in Mexico," discussing both the new opportunity and challenges for CPSS in the Latin American market.

Regulating Civilian Private Security Services

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hi!

The conference just about 5 weeks away, and that means position researching and writing. This is the time to delve into the issues, think critically about your country's history, policies, and actions, and form positions. The background guide contains a note on research and writing, as well as a description of the simulation during the conference.

Rise of Youth Criminals in South America

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hi!

I hope everyone is preparing for March. It is less than 2 months away!

This news report by Al-Jazeera provides an excellent overview of the problems facing youth in South America, as well as the rise of youth criminals. The video states some alarming statistics and also mentions a debate about lowering the age for incarceration. All of the issues discussed in the news report (and several others mentioned in the background guide) should be addressed in committee.

See you in committee,
Ryan

NHSMUN is almost here!

Conference:
NHSMUN

Hello delegates!

In a short amount of time I will finally be meeting you all! This is so exciting for me, as your director. This process, for me, began just about a year ago when I started to develop the agenda items for this committee. Look at us now! Our topics are published, the background guides are written, and I am just about to meet you! Pardon my excitement...

Some stuff in the news...

Conference:
NHSMUN Committee

Hello delegates!

I hope all is well. I am so sorry I have not posted in a while (although our fantastic AD, Sid, has been looking after the blog for us)! Getting everything squared away for NHSMUN in just a couple short weeks has been a little bit hectic!

Anyway, this morning while reading the newspaper and some online publications (a wonderful habit to build in college, regardless of your major), I found a recent ruling in the US in regards to an individual detained in relation to the War on Terror.

Foreign Prisoners and Deportation

Conference:
NHSMUN Committee

A common problem for many governments with regards to foreign prisoner treatments concerns what to do with the prisoners after their sentence as been served. Many nations hold that they have no obligation to house the prisoners after their sentence and often revoke visas for stay. Deportation is typically forced and requires many legal obstacles for efficient practice.
