Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN)

European Union Stalls Debt Talks

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Good Evening Delegates!

I know the EcoFin blog has been very Eurocentric, however, I think it is important that we, as a committee, keep up with this debt crisis that is plaguing a large part of the world.

Here's a great link to visit daily to track the debt crisis: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/business/global/european-debt-crisis-...

Greek Debt Update

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Greetings Delegates!

Another update on Greece (seems to be what EVERY news station is talking about).

The S&P (Standard and Poor's) considers Greece's debt situation (after it's new bonds were issued) as a selective default. Find out more at the link posted below.

An Update on Farm Subsidies

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hey Guys!

With a little more than a week before conference you should all be getting super excited for NHSMUN 2012. Beyond that, it is important to keep up with the news, especially the developments on agricultural subsidies. External debt management has been at the forefront of the news, but agricultural subsidies, a subtler topic should not be ignored.

Here are some links at what different areas of the world are going to change/do in 2012 in regards to agricultural subsidies:

Important Economic Terms

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Dearest Delegates,

Only two weeks until conference! Hope you all are as excited as I am! After reflecting on the complexity of the topics, especially in terms of economics, I thought it would be best to compose a glossary with terms that have probably come up in your research, many blogposts, and will definitely come up during committee. Please review these words; they will be essential to your understanding of both topics.

Some Economic Jargon:

Since We ARE the Economic and Financial Committee....

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hi Guys!

Since we are EcoFin, it may help you to watch the following videos to understand a few schools of economic thought and understand the different approaches to these issues. You'll see that these theories really do affect what is done in response to the issues we will be grappling with during NHSMUN in march.

-Amy

P.S. They are actually hilarious. I really recommend watching these to get a grasp on Keynesian vs Chicago school of economic theories.

Still Confused About Debt?

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hey Everyone!

There are so many nuances and rumors surrounding debt (in general and also directly related to the United States), that it may be hard to clear it all in your head.

Much ado about Debt

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

Hi Everyone!

Here's an interesting article from The Economist on Greece's debt situation. While our topic doesn't relate directly to Greece, it is pretty clear that Greece, Spain, Ireland, and Portugal are current nations facing large debt problems. It would be useful to review what some of these countries have been/are doing with their debt to either manage or pay it off.

Best of luck on papers! Can't wait to see you all at conference.

Debt in Perspective

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

An interesting look at how debt stacks up in different countries all over the world. While this may not be directly related to our topic of external debt management, it can surely highlight aspects of the world's financial system and how different countries compare to one another in regards to debt.

Krugman Opinion Piece

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

While this is obviously an opinion piece and cannot be taken as strict fact, this piece highlights how sovereign debt is vastly different from household or personal debt, the uses of debt for both highly developed and developing states, and the political battles that all too often emerge around debt. A valuable viewpoint to have!

Agricultural Subsidies Overview

Conference:
NHSMUN 2012

An absolutely amazing section from the Economist on agricultural subsidies and their effects on employment, development, trade, growth, and all sorts of other measures of economic success. Definitely a must read for all delegates!

PS As you may have noticed, I love the Economist and am going to use it fairly often as a resource. Definitely check out their website (http://www.economist.com) or follow them on twitter to stay up to date
