The Water Crisis in the Middle East

SpecPol specializes in issues regarding political and decolonization topics, ensuring that countries are able to maintain independence and remain self-sufficient rather than depending upon the colonial powers that once occupied them. The Middle East has a long history of being colonized, and the oncoming water crisis is only one result of the colonization it has suffered in the past. It is also an opportunity for neo-colonialism to take place, as countries that have power over the limited resources in the region have to potential to control the populations. With no means of developing water management technology or skills on their own, it is imperative for SpecPol to step in for precautionary measures rather than have to address an irreconcilable crisis in the future.

SpecPol has focused nearly all of its attention, past resolutions, and meetings on the Middle East, so it is no different that the water crisis in this region must be addressed. High school students will be interested in this topic because it is intriguing how, even in the 21st century, there exists a scarcity in such a valuable and seemingly limitless resource that has yet to be resolved by the global community.

Topic 2

UN Involvement in Election Monitoring

One of the biggest challenges for countries reviving from colonialism is being able to hold and maintain free and independent elections of their own. SpecPol is invested in ensuring countries’ independence and ability to choose their own government. Election observation is a very viable method in achieving this goal. The scope is broad because the topic is seldom discussed in the United Nations, which leaves room to be able to address more general and blanket global policies. This topic would be interesting for delegates because they would be able to see the huge impact election observation would have on countries’ futures. Because it is not region-specific, election monitoring is a topic in which all delegates could participate. It is also very relatable to delegates because many of them are close to voting age.
