I hope everyone had a great New Years! I hope we get off to a great start this year and keep it up until NHSMUN!

So last time I posted about some current events concerning Haiti. For the sake of keeping up with both topics, this blog post is going to be about the global freedom of the press.

Specifically, I'm going to focus on the World Press Freedom Day. Below is a video that features UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova stating the importance of the public freedom to know and the safety of journalists. The statement was made to honor World Press Freedom Day, which occurs on May 3rd every year.

This day was created by UNESCO, along with a prize that goes to a person who has significantly advanced freedom of expression of the press in their field of work. The following website gives information on World Press Freedom Day 2011, which the USA will host.

The goals of this day are more than simply to hand a prize and provide awareness. It aims "to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession." The website also focuses on new barriers involving forms of technology such as the internet and countries of interest that have significant violations of freedom of expression of the press.

I urge you delegates to research the significance of this day, its implications on the policies of many nations, and even come up with similar solutions that could be proposed and could have a similar effect of freedom of expression globally.
