The Republic of Honduras is located in Central America. It borders the Caribbean Sea between Guatemala and Nicaragua and the Gulf of Fonseca in the North Pacific Ocean between El Salvador and Nicaragua. Honduras won its independence from Spain in 1821, after which it went through a period of military rule until an elected civilian government arose in 1982. Today it is a democratic constitutional republic. Its constitution has been changed multiple times, most recently in 2012. It has a civil law system, a chief of state and a head of government (the president is both). The size the country in area is 112, 0090 square kilometers, of which 111,890 square kilometers is land.
