It has a population of 5,567,301 people and is surrounded by the Straits of Johor to the north and the Singapore Strait to the south. Singapore has an area of 227 square miles (718.3 km^2), making this state over 3.5 times larger than Washington D.C. Singapore operates under a parliamentary republican government, which includes a president elected by popular vote, a prime minister selected by the president, and a Parliament. Home to some of the world’s busiest ports and financial centers, Singapore is one of the Four Asian Tigers due to its highly developed and robust economy.
