The UNCHR was disbaned in 2006 in favor of the new United Nations Human Rights Council, an indepedent council under the General Assembly rather the Economic and Social Council.  Many felt that the growing polarity of the committee and the numerous human rights violations from leading members made the committee ineffectual in promoting the development of human rights across the globe.
