Sao Tome and Principe (Portuguese: São Tomé and Príncipe), officially the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, is an island country in Western and Central Africa. The islands, located off the western coast of the country of Gabon, comprise 964 square kilometers and are inhabited by about 190,000 people, making Sao Tome and Principe the second-smallest country in Africa. The islands were originally discovered and settled by Portuguese explorers in the late 15th century, and gained independence in 1975.
